Is design really that different from art? This is a common question that will launch most designers into a battle to defend what they believe is the best process for creating effective designs. While certain types of design are less oriented around research, most designers in the product space will end up following a repeatable process that is not unlike the scientific method.
This week, in a collaboration between Moss and The Healthcare Club of New York, Sarah gave a virtual talk on The Science of Design. Sarah is the co-founder of Moss, product design lead, and a former healthcare professional.
Her talk drew parallels between the scientific method and popular design thinking methodologies used both at Moss and as a standard practice in the industry at large. She used examples from past studio projects like the breast cancer risk assessment app Gabbi and a clinical research coordinator Clara Health to talk through how her process can vary depending on the specific needs of each project and how the research-driven nature of it helps healthcare-oriented teams trust her quickly.
The Q&A period in the final minutes of the talk yielded a few excellent questions about how to bring science to design and design into clinical spaces. One attendee asked about how to cope with limited access to users on projects working with busy, highly in-demand doctors, hospital admin, or patients. Sarah recommended that designers consider who else is interacting with these users, perhaps a receptionist or nurse. These professionals tend to have an outside perspective and lots of insight into how to improve processes.
Moss is a design studio addressing the gap between the state of women's healthcare and how we believe it should be. They’re based in California and work remotely from cities across the US and Canada.
The Healthcare Club is a non-profit organization comprised of professionals in the New York City area who work in or are interested in healthcare. They meet every few months for talks, informal networking gatherings, and other content-driven events.
